lyrics

I got the call on Tuesday
I went down to the docks
To see the Voynich brothers
Meatface and Gumby
Gumby took me round to see the equipment
It was dark in the heart of the warehouse
There were sparks and arcs of electricity
There were glass jars and large retorts
In the biggest one, I could see Eric
“He gave himself to science,” said Gumby
I agreed but avoided Eric’s stare
Meatface turned up and took over
He led me to a large armchair
High-backed, with leather and plump upholstery
I ignored the wires emerging from the back
Meatface indicated where I should sit
I shuffled up
I didn’t feel I could refuse

Afterward, once I had stopped screaming
And I was still enough that the restraints could be unbuckled
I felt quite different
Lighter, happier even
I discovered I could transform the world around me
I could turn paper into cheese
And delicate electronic equipment into fishes
I could even turn the fishes into buttons
But only shirt buttons
I decided to go home and reflect upon these things
Perhaps now I could make a difference
And people would take me seriously
